Bring Your Web Apps to the Desktop with Adobe AIR
Adobe Apollo, now named Adobe AIR is allowing for web developers to use their existing skill set to roll out desktop apps for Windows and Mac OS X. This allows for bringing web apps to the desktop for on and offline use.
Here is the description from Adobe…
Adobe® AIR™, formerly code-named Apollo, is a cross-operating system runtime that allows developers to use their existing web development skills to build and deploy rich Internet applications to the desktop.
So you can take your Flash/Flex and XHTML/CSS/Javascript/AJAX Applications and compile them in a AIR application. The users have to install the Adobe AIR runtime on their machines to run the apps, but the nice thing is that the runtime installer can be distributed with the apps. The runtime will only have to be installed once of course.
It is in BETA phase, but version 1 should be out second half of 2007. The runtime and SDK, will both be free. Version 1 will support windows and mac os x, with plans to support Linux shortly after that release.
