Being Online While Offline: Intro to Google Gears

Posted By: Derek on Jun 7th 2007 @ 10:15 am

Google CodeGoogle just announced a open source project called Gears. In a nut shell Gears is a browser extension that enables web applications to provide offline functionality.

How this works is, the developer has to make their application use Google Gears in the javascript code. It doesn’t automatically make sites work off line. The client has to also download the Google Gears plugin, which is easy as installing a flash player. It currently is only supported for Firefox 1.5 and greater on Linux, Mac and Windows, and IE 6 and greater for windows. They are working to support more browsers such as Safari for Mac.

The nice thing about this is it free for developers and users. I think this is a beginning to something great. Allowing users to use web sites and applications with out internet connection can help make web apps more possible. Now it is a BETA release and there is more to come, but I think this is going to be a big deal. Shows a lot about what Google plans for in the future, which is making the desktop and web seamless. Google already has a Gmail, Google Docs, Google Spreadsheets, Google Maps, which I see soon being able to be used offline. I see a lot of potential in this technology and cannot wait to see what comes from this. Learn more about Google Gears on Googles site.
